Coming off a six-game losing streak, the Chargers took the court last Tuesday looking to get back on the winning side. Freshman guard Jah’Likai King stood out for New Haven, scoring 18 points in the first half and finishing with 26, leading the team to a 74-60 victory over Adelphi.
King started off hot scoring on the game’s opening possession and a three-pointer just 39 seconds later. This started the Chargers off on a 19-0 run in the opening minutes. The Chargers continued with this momentum as they put up 39 points in the first half and held an 18-point lead going into halftime..
Senior forward Davontrey Thomas followed King with 19 points and sophomore forward Ethan Simmon also managed to put up double digits during the matchup, adding 13 to the scoreboard for New Haven.
Simmon led the top three scorers from the field, where he was five-for-eight from the field and a perfect two-for-two at the free throw line. Thomas shot seven-for-11 while King finished nine of 17 from the field. King also went a perfect seven-for-seven from the free throw line.
As a team, the Chargers finished out the night shooting 52.9% from the field, a season high for New Haven. Adelphi finished the game shooting only 37.7% from the field. New Haven connected on 27-of-51 shot attempts, with only four of those coming from beyond the three-point arc. The Chargers also finished 16-of-18 at the free throw.
New Haven held a significant advantage in rebounds, pulling down 38 compared to Adelphi’s 22. Leading the team in rebounds was sophomore forward Joshua Hopson along with Simmon who each pulled down eight. In addition to his team-high 26 points, King also led the team with six assists, five rebounds and three steals.
The Chargers will play their third-straight home game against the Georgian Court Lions on Tuesday. Coming off their first conference win, the team will look to start a winning streak to even out their record.
