After a strong win against Molloy University last week, the men’s basketball team hosted the Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Penmen, but fell short, 67-81.
The first half began with back-and-forth offensive gains between both teams until the Penmen went on a seven–point spree and entered half time with a 39-32 lead over the Chargers. New Haven was unable to mount a comeback in the second half as SNHU continued to put points up on the scoreboard. During both quarters, the Chargers and Penmen exchanged the lead five times and tied the game four times with both benches contributing a significant number of points.
Forward Ethan Simmon paved the way for the Chargers with 17 points and finished the game shooting 5-for-12 from the field, 5-for-9 from the three-point arc and 2-for-2 in free throws. Guard Seth Sharif-Brown finished with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Guards Jah’Likai King and Najimi George each added seven points for New Haven. King added four assists, two rebounds and a steal while George finished shooting 3-for-6 from the field and 1-for-3 at the three-point arc.
Along with New Haven’s leading scorers, each Charger was able to find the back of the net throughout the game. Guard Tristian Jeffries added six points. Forward Ugo Nwachukwu and guard Mohamed Traore both secured five points. Nwachukwu also added five rebounds, a block and a steal. Traore finished the game shooting 2-for-4 from the field and 1-for-3 at the three-point line. Guard Javel Cherry had four points. Forwards Tarese Morse and Kyle Kearson both had three points and Kearson added three rebounds while Morse had one.
The Penmen were led by Paul Greene and Kurtis Henderson who scored 18 and 17 points, respectively. SNHU dominated defensively and finished the game with 41 rebounds and only gave up eight turnovers.
New Haven and SNHU were neck and neck as the Chargers finished the game shooting 46% from the field while the Penmen shot 46.4%. At the three-point line, New Haven went 14-for-33 while the Penmen finished shooting 11-for-24. SNHU tallied 14 personal fouls which led the Chargers to shoot 7-for-12 at the free throw line.
As a team, New Haven collected 27 rebounds, nine assists, two blocks and two steals. The Chargers tallied 14 turnovers and 12 personal fouls.
Shortly after their loss, the Chargers beat the American International College (AIC) Yellow Jackets in a conference game, 86-57. King led New Haven’s offense with 13 points and again, every Charger was able to put points up on the board. New Haven finished the game shooting 32-for-58 from the field compared to the Yellow Jacket’s shooting 24-for-58. The Chargers collected 42 rebounds, 17 assists, three blocks and three steals.
After the loss and win, New Haven has an overall record of 4-4 and 2-3 in the Northeast-10 conference. The Chargers will travel to Lakewood N.J. to face the Georgian Court University Lions on Wednesday for a non-conference league game.
