PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored 20 points and Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the University of New Haven men’s basketball team to a 10-point victory, 62-52, over Pace University on Sunday night.
The Chargers improved to 14-7 overall and 11-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. UNH also remains in the fifth place in the NE-10 with the win. Pace dropped to 9-12 overall and 6-11 in conference play with the loss.
Williams went 8-for-15 from the field, including four three-pointers. He added seven rebounds to his night. Anderson also contributed nine points and a season-high six blocks. Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) each chipped in with 12 points. Exum added eight rebounds and five assists in the win.
New Haven raced out to an early lead in Sunday’s game. Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) sunk a layup just over five minutes into the first half and capped a 10-0 run for UNH. The Chargers took their largest lead of the half, 12-2. The Setters gradually crawled back into the game, cutting New Haven’s lead to as few as three twice. The Chargers led by seven, 30-23, at the break.
New Haven shot 39 percent from the floor and 29 percent from three-point range. Anderson led the team with three of the team’s four blocks in the opening period.
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) connected on one-of-two free throws three minutes into the second half to once again put the Chargers ahead by 10, 35-25. The Setters closed the lead back to single digits and kept it that close until the final seconds. Pace cut the UNH lead to three points, 49-46, with 7:03 left and that was as close as they would come. Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) connected from downtown and the Chargers hit free throws in the final minute to seal the 10-point victory.
In the game, New Haven shot 40.4 percent from the field and 32.1 percent from beyond the arc. The Chargers also went 11-of-15 from the line, while the Setters went just 2-for-3 at the charity stripe.
New Haven returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in the first of a two-game homestand. Assumption travels to Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday night for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. On Saturday, Feb. 16 Le Moyne will visit West Haven.
