WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men’s soccer team tied Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday afternoon, 1-1 after two overtimes at Kayo Field. The tie was the second of the season for the Chargers as they are now 0-1-2 overall. The Spartans are now 2-0-2.
The Spartans got on the board first and early on a goal from Joseph Connolly at the 5:04 mark in the first half. From that point on, New Haven’s defense stepped up and would not surrender another goal the remainder of the game.
At the 54:54 minute, Joseph D’Antonio (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside ) snuck one past Saint Thomas Aquinas on a penalty kick to tie the game. The Chargers played well in the second half and added six more shots, five more than they had in the first. Opportunies were there for both squads but neither team could take the lead as regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
The overtime periods were much like the first and second halves. The Spartans out shot New Haven 3-to-1 but could not put one in the net as the game ended in a draw.
Saint Thomas Aquinas had 17 shots compared to the Chargers’ eight, however, goalkeeper J.J. Comeau (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan ) recorded 10 saves in the game. The Spartans had just two. Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) had a team-high two shots, both on goal and six other Chargers recorded one shot each.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, September 13 as they travel to Stonehill College for a 4 p.m. start time.
