NEW HAVEN – The University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team defeated Southern Connecticut State University 19-3 Thursday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. With the win the Chargers improve to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls fall to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Owls scored the first goal Thursday, but the Chargers answered back with nine consecutive goals through the first half. Laura McLean scored the first two for UNH, while Sarah Magnone scored four goals in the first half. Sarah LeGoff scored two in the first, while Lisa Barnard scored one.
McLean scored the Chargers’ tenth goal in the third minute of the second half. SCSU then added one to bring the scored to 10-2. Over the next 15 minutes the Chargers went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-2 lead. The Owls added their third with five minutes left, before the Chargers scored the game’s final three goals. Carolina Marrero, Magnone and Lieberman each scored to give the Chargers a 19-3 final score.
Magnone led the Chargers with five goals and two assists. She also grabbed three draw controls and two ground balls. Curry scored four goals and also grabbed three ground balls.
Lieberman and McLean each scored three goals and handed out one assist, while Lieberman led the team with two ground balls and four draw controls.
Maureen Spellman faced eight shots in the net for UNH. She recorded five saves and three goals against.
The Chargers led in nearly every statistical category, including a 14-9 advantage in draw controls.
