For all those interested in art and local artists, this weekend, Oct. 3 to Oct. 5, Artspace will be holding a free city-wide open studio gallery showing. The hours are as follows: Friday, Oct. 3 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday Oct. 5 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
This is a great event because it hosts local artists in five chosen locations: downtown New Haven, West Haven, Fair Haven, Hamden, and Westville. There are bike and walking tours from site to site which makes this a unique chance to get in some exercise while viewing the art. There are also bus shuttles from each site if walking or biking does not appeal to you.
Each site sponsors several artists who have been handpicked by two jurors: one being a gallery owner and the other being a local art professor from schools such as Southern Connecticut State University and Yale. Sixty to 80 artists will be showcased in total, spread throughout the five selected galleries and several art studios in the area. The galleries are revived buildings, chosen to help bring life to a once run down area.
Expect to see very eccentric artwork and have the chance to meet the talented artists who created it. Artists range in age, background, and genre of work, expressing great diversity and a real taste of what our state’s local artwork is all about.
Again, this event is free and is a very interesting deviation from the usual weekend on-campus events. Take this chance to experience local art while it’s available for free. For more information, visit www.cwos.org.
