Mitigue is a University of New Haven band that was formed in 2011. The band members include Brendan Burke (lead vocals and guitar), Jay Stirone (vocals and guitar), Greg Lake (bass), and Tyler Somes (drums). Their self-titled EP was recently released, and is an amazing compilation of music that demonstrates exactly who they are trying to be as artists.
The first song titled “Ranch” is my favorite by far. It merges reggae with a layer of jazz (in cooperating a saxophone in the chorus). Besides having an infectious melody, the song also encompasses profound lyrics. There is a poetic element to their music that flows very nicely with the melodic structure of the song.
The best aspect of this band is that they do not try to overcomplicate any of their music. They have deep lyrics, steady melodies, infectious verses and a distinct style.
“Chemical Boat,” is the second track on the album. This has a bit of an edgier feel to it, as opposed to “Ranch,” but is still verging on that “island,” feel that is really uplifting to listen to. This song has an awesome tempo, which really makes the listener feel as though they’re driving along the west coast in a convertible with the top down.
There is a line in the chorus that says, “don’t wait on me, ‘cause I’ve nailed my feet to the ground.” Not only is this line catchy and deep, but it also actually makes the listener analyze and think. Not many songs today can engage a listener to the point where they really consider the words they are listening to.
There are three other songs that this EP includes, titled “Heroin Song,” “I Am The Liquor,” and “Monsters.” Each of these songs has a very different element than the last, making the entire EP an easy, continuous listen. This EP is available for download at mitigue.bandcamp.com, and all of their constant updates can be found on facebook.com/mitigue.
Mitigue is a nice change of pace from your average band. They have a distinct style about them, which makes them exciting to listen to. Be sure to follow up on their upcoming shows as well. Their next big performance will be Oct. 22, 2012, when they will open for We Are the Union, at The Space in Hamden, Conn. This rock-based, reggae-punk band is bringing a new definition to music, and are surely on their way to big success. I can promise after hearing just one of their tracks you will be an instant fan of anything these boys release.
