Students from the University of New Haven Theatre Program received a standing ovation after their performances of Little Shop of
Horrors this week.
The play was performed in Dodds Theatre at the University of New Haven. There were multiple showings on April 25, 26, 27, and 28 at either 7:30 p.m. or 2:00 p.m.
Tyler Prigionieri starred as Seymour, the clumsy botanist who created an alien plant that grew only by being fed fresh human blood. At first Seymour was using his own blood, but as the plant got larger, he needed to outsource.
Prigionieri’s costar, Elizabeth Wood, played Audrey. Audrey and Seymour had a secret love that truly added a twist to the play. Prigionieri and Wood where also accompanied by James Zap, who played Orin, Audrey’s abusive boyfriend, and sadistic dentist. All three played their parts perfectly and truly won over the audience.
The play was staged in a florists shop on Skid Row in NYC. Everyone that lived a hopeless life on Skid Row until the plant came around. For awhile things were looking up for Seymour, Audrey, and the florist shop owner, Mr. Mushnik, but then the plant grew out of control and ironically things took a turn for the worst again.
The play had a number of funny, rock songs. The Urchins, three drop outs Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronnette, sang the narration of the story. The student performers sang amazingly and really pulled off a great show. The acting was hysterical and kept the audience laughing. Little Shop of Horrors is a comedy, horror, rock play and the students couldn’t have pulled it off any better.
