Students literally put their literacy knowledge into action Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Dodds Theatre for UNH’s first Literacy Contest sponsored by Lambda Psi Delta Sorority Inc.
The contest was created to be an entertaining outlet for literacy lovers to innovatively show their literacy skills through music, videos, campaigns and literature. Contestants were judged by a panel of peers that came from a variety of educational backgrounds. Judging components included participant creativity and task execution.
Two teams participated in this year’s contest: team No Name and The LILiies. Each team composed of three students who all seemed to be very passionate about written and spoken word.
Contestants battled for points through three rounds of creative word play. The first round titled “Act It Out,” consisted of giving teams a series of eight words and having participants perform the definition of the word. Students put their imagination to work to complete quick skits for words such as limbo, apparition, diaspora, promiscuous and hottie.
“Each team was given words that we may not always hear in everyday lingo,” said Dayne Danielle Clarke, 2012 -2013 Alpha Chapter Vice President.
The second and third round included Who Wants to be a Millionaire: Literacy Edition, and Literate Karaoke which involved correcting grammatical errors while singing karaoke songs.
In the end, team No Name won the competition, beating the LILies in rounds one and two. Winners received a $50 VISA gift card for each team member. The LILies, however, did not leave empty handed, taking home the 2nd place price of $25 per team member
Lambda Psi Delta wants to make the literacy contest an annual event open to all UNH students. Next year, promoters hope to gather more scholars to participate in this event that promotes inventively expressing the written word and having some literacy fun.
“…the event turned out to be a great success and we hope to do something of the sort each year,” said Clarke.
