When two single adults become the caregivers to an orphaned baby, comedy and hardship lies in their future. Goofy mistakes, making the best of a bad situation, and a heartwarming ending all describe how great Life as We Know It is.
Life as We Know It was directed by Greg Berlanti and produced by Josephson Entertainment. Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel play the onscreen couple Holly Berenson and Eric Messer. The movie was released October 8, 2010 and has earned the rating PG-13 for language and some drug content.
When the married best friends of Holly and Eric die in an accident, the two single adults become the guardians for their friends’ infant daughter, Sophie. When Sophie’s parents die, both Holly and Eric are distraught and in mourning when a life changing bomb is thrown at them. This was in the form of legal guardianship of Sophie. They both try and mostly fail to fill in their successful friends’ shoes. With a mutual desire to keep Sophie and the family that they have created together, they begin to work together and make great progress in raising Sophie, as the tagline for the movie goes “taking life one step at a time.”
A key moment in the movie is when the relationship between Holly and Eric changes significantly after a CPS agent comes unexpectedly to inspect their living situation. Eric was dead with exhaustion and Holly was giddily drunk when the lady came over. She did not give them a good review, and their emotions took control of their brains, causing nasty things to be said. After they reconcile, their relationship is more positive; then the real story begins.
I highly recommend this movie to the young adult population in general. It is not precisely a “chick” movie, but turns out to be a comedy for all. This movie was very cleverly written and performed by a fantastic cast. It could not be any better than what it was.
