He defeated the Dark Lord when he was just a baby. He won the Triwizard Tournament. He infiltrated the Ministry of Magic. He has glasses, green eyes, and a lightning scar on his forehead. If you still don’t know who I am talking about, get to a bookstore immediately! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh installment of J.K. Rowling’s series, was released back in 2007, but remains a favorite among loyal Potter fans to date. With the premiere of the seventh movie merely a few days away, who doesn’t want to reread that book cover to cover?
When we last saw Harry in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore’s funeral left all of Hogwarts solemn and defeated. Before departing, Dumbledore gave Harry the crucial task of finding and destroying the remainder of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. With Ron and Hermione by his side, Harry spends most of the Deathly Hallows in search of the hidden Horcruxes. The trio inevitably meets a few challenges along the way, some of which involve sneaking into the Ministry of Magic and robbing Gringotts Bank.
While the ongoing battle against Voldemort continues, however, Rowling ties up a few loose ends. In particular, the hidden connection between Harry and Voldemort, the legend of the Deathly Hallows, and Dumbledore’s mysterious past. And let’s not forget the long-awaited romance between Ron and Hermione. Naturally, there are some who pictured the Harry-Hermione, Luna-Ron, Hermione-Krum relationships to kick off, but who are we kidding? Ron and Hermione were made for each other.
Unsurprisingly, Deathly Hallows contains more deaths than in any other Potter book. At least five beloved characters meet an untimely end in the final novel. However, despite the rising death toll, Rowling ends the series on a positive note. Her use of comic relief and thrilling action-packed scenes make the Deathly Hallows an overall page turner.
An enticing read from beginning to end, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows truly is a wonderful finale to a series that defined a generation. It will keep you laughing, crying, and begging for an eighth book.
In the end, the ultimate question remains: Does Harry survive? There is only one way to know for sure.
