WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Robert Jamerson recorded a game-high 19 points on Saturday afternoon, as the University of New Haven men’s basketball team kept their playoff hopes alive with a 61-57 victory over Le Moyne College at Charger Gymnasium. With the win, UNH improved to 7-17 on the season and 5-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Dolphins dropped to 10-13, 8-11 in the league.
The Dolphins opened with the better of the play early on in the first half. Le Moyne connected on 73 percent (8-of-11) of their field goals in the first 10 minutes to take a 23-14 lead. However, after a timeout from head coach Ted Hotaling, the Chargers boasted off an 18-6 run to close the half. Jamerson fared well on the offensive end, as the home team captured a 32-29 lead at the break.
Jamerson reached double figures in the frame, registering 10 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting. Mike Stys poured in six on two buckets from long range and Justin Exum added five for the Chargers. James Cormier recorded a team-high with seven points in the first half for the Dolphins.
After the intermission, Jamerson, Jeffery Adkins and Stys granted UNH its largest lead of the game with three consecutive baskets. Through the first five minutes, the Chargers went on a 7-2 run for a 39-31 advantage. The two teams would trade baskets until the 8:23 mark, where New Haven held a 50-42 advantage.
Le Moyne wouldn’t go away though, as the Dolphins battled back with a 10-1 run over the next six minutes of play – taking a one point lead, 53-52.
On their ensuing possession, Jamerson tied the score up at 53-53 with a free-throw and then the Chargers defense forced a Dolphin turnover with just under a minute to play. After a timeout, Exum put the home team back on top with a deep three-pointer from the wing for a 56-53 lead.
In the final seconds, Adkins and Jeremy Williams knocked down 5-of-8 from the charity stripe to solidify a 61-57 victory.
The Chargers held the Dolphins to just six three-pointers and a mediocre shooting percentage of 38 percent on the afternoon. UNH negated a 41-28 deficit on the glass with a respectable 45 percent shooting, including seven from long range.
Jamerson finished 9-of-15 from the floor with four rebounds and three assists. Exum also finished with double-digits with 10 points and six rebounds, while Adkins and Stys each chimed in with nine. Williams had six and Krystian Foriest knocked down two field goals for five points.
Three members of the Le Moyne team tallied double-figures – Chris Johnson had 14, Nate Champion finished with 11 and Jim Janson tallied 10.
New Haven returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, February 16 with a game on the road at Saint Rose. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Albany, N.Y.
