Alfio Russo, Consulate General of Italy in New York City, addressed the University of New Haven community Thursday Nov. 13, in a speech that urged those present to embrace multiculturalism and support globalization.
Russo said that globalization is the most important word in any field right now. He told the audience that connections and communications between various cultures help to enrich our personal and social identities.
“Globalization is an opportunity, not a limit,” Russo said.
In his thick Italian accent, Russo told individuals that one of the most vital aspects of multiculturalism is being able to speak many languages. Russo said that being multilingual helps individuals succeed on both global and personal levels. According to Russo, speaking many languages fosters a better understanding of diversity and allows for success in the business world.
“Becoming multilingual means to live multiple lives,” Russo said. “A multicultural experience enhances our social identity.”
Russo praised both the United States and Europe for their steps toward a multicultural world. “In the US,” Russo said, “multiculturalism appears to be a priority.”
