WORCESTER, Mass. – With just over one second left, the Assumption College men’s basketball team concluded an 11-0 run to close the game and came from behind for a one-point 57-56 victory over the University of New Haven. The Chargers dropped to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) led the UNH offense with 14 points off 5-of-11 shooting and 4-of-7 from three-point territory. Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) added 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting, while Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) chipped in with 12 points on 4-of-16 from the field.
New Haven jumped out to an early lead off an Exum three-pointer, but the Greyhounds look the lead just minutes later. The game was tied at 8-8 just under 6:30 into the first half before Assumption took the lead. Assumption led by as many as eight points in the first half and held a 32-25 lead at the break.
The Chargers struggled to come back in the first minutes of the second half. Anderson scored a jumper at the 16:57 mark and began the New Haven comeback. Williams and Anderson added another basket to bring the score within two points, 39-37. New Haven’s scoring spree continued and concluded with an Exum three-pointer with 3:16 left in the second half. The basket gave the Chargers a ten-point lead, 56-46, and finished an 11-1 run for UNH. The momentum then swung in favor of the Greyhounds and Assumption went on its own 11-0 run to finish the game.
As a team, New Haven shot 40.8 percent from the floor, 45.0 percent from three-point range and 100 percent from the free throw line. The Chargers were outrebounded 35-25, including a 10-4 disadvantage on the offensive boards. Assumption connected on over 50 percent of its shots and 100 percent from the charity stripe.
Five players each recorded four rebounds for the New Haven, leading the Chargers on the glass.
New Haven returns to NE-10 road action at Le Moyne on Saturday, Dec. 1. Game time in Syracuse, N.Y. is set for 3 p.m. The Chargers will return home on Tuesday, Dec. 4 against American International.
