Captain America: Civil War (May 6)

Already being called one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Civil War will be the third Captain America film and the thirteenth film in the MCU, which has been the most consistent in quality of any franchise. Introducing the superhero Black Panther, as well as the Marvel Studios version of SpiderMan, Civil War is said to be an excellent follow up to both The Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron. After the massive disappointment of superhero face off film Batman v. Superman earlier this year, Marvel’s faceoff between Iron Man and Captain America will surely deliver on more fronts, both emotional and action plot points. My tickets are bought, and if you want to see it opening night, as you should any MCU film, then buy yours soon, as public interest is high.

X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27)

2014’s Days of Future Past set the bar for X-Men films with excellent direction by franchise originator Brian Singer. Apocalypse looks to be another quality film that further develops the relationship of Professor X and Magneto, which has been the main theme since the younger cast was introduced in First Class in 2011. Singer hasn’t put out a bad X-Men film, and all the actors that made the past two great are coming back, so it’s safe to say Apocalypse will be worth the ticket price.

Finding Dory (June 17)

Anyone born in the past two decades grew up with Finding Nemo, the Pixar film that brought the ocean to life far better than any films. This sequel is going to focus on Marlin and Nemo’s efforts to help Dory find her family. While the trailer looks rather bland and more or less of the same thing, of course any millennial has to see Finding Dory. Monsters University was the follow up to Monster’s Inc., and while not nearly as good, it was still enjoyable, which Finding Dory surely will be.

Independence Day: Resurgence (June 24)

For those who grew up with the original 1996 Independence Day, seeing Jeff Goldblum back on screen as a computer nerd will surely be nostalgic for many. We’ve definitely had our fair share of alien invasion films, yet Resurgence will show the after effects of an alien invasion of the world. With a more advanced wave coming back to fight for Earth again, humans have also developed better technology to fight the aliens. While director Roland Emerich’s films have always been rather emotionally shallow, he knows how to direct fun action films. 2012 had an awful plot, but was aesthically pleasing, just as seeing alien motherships destroying entire cities in the state of the art effects of IMAX 3D will be with Resurgence.

The Legend of Tarzan (July 1)

Having just seen Disney’s 1999 Tarzan, this new Warner Brothers film has a lot going for it. The film is spearheaded by Harry Potter director David Yates, who already knows how to bring out emotions in stories artistically. The film’s trailer shows the jungle and the apes look on par to those shown in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which should have won an Oscar. Also, starring Christoph Waltz from Inglorious Basterd’s and Django Unchained, Waltz has created some of the best characters through his work with Tarantino. Hopefully, he brings the same intensity he brought to those films to Tarzan villain Captain Rom. This film seems to have more an interesting take than the simplicity of the Disney film. Though, I am sure that there will be no Phil Collins songs as Waltz massacres villagers.

Star Trek: Beyond (July 22)

Since the Star Trek films were rebooted in 2009 by J.J. Abrams, the series has put out two thrilling space epics with dynamic characters and a lot of heart. The third film in this reboot is coming out this summer. The first film and Into Darkness were directed by Abrams, yet he had to go work on the small project of Star Wars. Justin Linn from the Fast and Furious franchise is taking the lead here. While not having seen his work, the cast assembled from the first two films have great chemistry that could carry a movie alone.  The crew of the Enterprise will finally go into deep space, getting the plot farther away from Star Wars and more into the sci-fi heavy TV series from the 1960s.
