Field hockey continues success, moves to 5-0 in NE-10
The Chargers field hockey team jumped out early and never looked back, defeating Molloy College 7-1 Tuesday night. Coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to No. 10 Bloomsburg on Sunday, New Haven had something to prove and a conference win streak to keep alive against Molloy.
They sat at 4-0 in the NE-10 and looked to stay perfect against a winless Molloy team that was looking for anything to get them going–but the Lions did not find that on Tuesday. The Chargers put on an offensive show, controlling possession and pressing the attack throughout the match.
The Chargers struck the first two and a half minutes into the match when Taylor Geaglone rattled one past keeper Ally Saigh off the Charger penalty corner. This was only the beginning, as the Chargers scored two more in the first quarter off of the sticks of Katherine Trammel and Reilly Bialko.
The second quarter was similar to the first with the Blue and Gold dominating. However, sloppy play in the final third led to the Chargers being shut out in the second quarter, even though the quarter was mostly played in the attacking zone for the Blue and Gold. New Haven had opportunities and earned four penalty corners but never put on the finishing touches.
Going into the second half, the Chargers led by three. Similar to the first half, the Blue and Gold quickly applied pressure. It did not take long before the Lions’ back line broke. The Blue and Gold earned eight penalty corners across the quarter, and started out by converting two of their first three. The Chargers found the cage four times coming off the sticks of Abby Nixon, Audrey Larson, Sophie Schreck and Geaglone, who rattled home her second goal of the match.
This lead allowed for players to come off the bench and earn valuable minutes and experience, especially for freshmen players. Head coach Kelsi Lykens was able to keep a constant rotation of subs going through and added in a mix of players that have not had as much playing time as others.
Molloy scored their only goal late in the fourth, but their efforts were too little too late as the Chargers took the match, winning 7-1.
New Haven moves to 5-0 in the NE-10 and 5-4 overall, with their only losses coming to top-10 ranked teams. Next, the Chargers look to stay perfect in conference play when they travel to NE-10 foe Assumption College on Oct. 3 with the match starting at 1 p.m.
