On Sept. 22, 2012, the University of New Haven was buzzing with activity as families flooded the main campus for the annual Family Day. This was a time for students, especially freshmen, to reconnect with their loved ones after nearly a month in college. The day of festivities also gave parents the opportunity to explore the many nooks and crannies of the UNH campus, as well as the attractions located in surrounding cities.
The university, students, organizations and Student Activities prepared dozens of events for families to enjoy. The day got off to a strong start as Catalina Gonzalez performed live music for students and parents. A book drive was also hosted by the Office of Community Service, in which donations were made to W.H.E.A.T in West Haven.
At 12 p.m., families gathered outside Maxcy Hall to send off the Charger Pep Band as they headed to North Campus for the football game against St. Anselm at 1 p.m.
Another treat offered to relatives was having the David A. Beckerman Recreation Center free for the entire day. Families were encouraged to enjoy everything the facility had to offer.
Various trips were held throughout the day, both on and off campus. This included a historic tour of West Haven, a guided tour of Maxcy Hall (UNH’s first building), and shuttles to downtown New Haven where families were free to roam the New Haven Green or check out the many specialty shops and museums.
Several off-campus events included a trip to Jones’ Family Farm in Shelton, Conn., where apple picking, pumpkin picking and a winery were available. Captain Bob’s Tour of the Thimble Islands allowed families to enjoy some relaxation time as they cruised on a 72-foot Volsunga IV boat during a 45-minute ride through the islands. Individuals with a sweet tooth were encouraged to attend the trip to the PEZ factory in Orange, Conn.
Other activities held throughout the course of the day included a Mock Crime Scene tour and finger printing in the Henry C. Lee Building, a Quidditch match in Kayo Field, the Inflatable Funfest, a performance by hypnotist Jim Spinnato, and many more family fun activities.
