Fun, exciting, humorous, and touching are just a few words to describe this amazing movie. The rumor mill at Ojai High School stays active and full when Olive Penderghast forms a soft spot for the underdogs around her, but as a result, gets a horrible reputation as the School Harlot when she says the wrong lie in the wrong place.
Will Gluck, the director of Easy A, had sworn off of high school comedies after Fired Up. However, that was such a bust; he jumped at the chance to put his own comedic stamp on this incredible movie. Easy A was produced by Olive Bridge Entertainment and Screen Gems and released September 17, 2010. The main actors are Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, and Amanda Bynes in her last film appearance. Easy A is rated PG-13 for teen sexuality, language, and drug material. Olive Penderghast is open for business for the guys who need a reputation boost, but her life quickly spins out of her control with the help of the school prayer group and the reading assignment of The Scarlet Letter.
Olive’s life as Hester Prynne is an amusing tale to tell; she starts off as anonymous at school, but then a friend asks her a favor, “Just one good, imaginary tryst” to hide his homosexuality. Once that memorable weekend ends, he tells his other underdog friends the truth and she starts “helping” out guys who give her gifts and money. The high school prayer group sets out to destroy her life through mob mentality. She then, in turn, shows the school her amusement with the entire façade. While she is having her fun, however, her best friend comes to hate her and her high school crush is around her more and more. After a heartfelt confession to her mom, Olive turns her life around.
The turning moment in the movie was when Olive embraced the title that the school gave her and gave them exactly what they were wanting. This happened because Olive’s best friend, Rhiannon (Aly Michalka), tells her how upset she is with Olive’s new reputation. Of course hateful things were said and the situation went downhill from there, especially since Rhiannon joins the mob of students who were rallying to get rid of Olive. Because of this fallout, Olive changes her wardrobe and persona.
I highly recommend this movie for anyone who needs, or wants, a good laugh. This movie is not gender specific or too focused on the “romantic” part of this comedy, so the guys will definitely like this movie as much as the girls. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole movie, especially Olive’s very dry and sarcastic humor.
