With a 42% critic score and a 74% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the new live action version of the 1937 Disney classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is not the only thing leaving audiences feeling rather sleepy.
Actress Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen in the film, has viewers loudly criticizing her lackluster performance.
According to the online British newspaper, The Independent, many online have expressed their dissatisfaction with Gadot’s acting, with one user on X/Twitter writing: “I enjoyed the movie and Rachel but Gal Gadot ruined it truthfully, her acting… her singing was diabolical.”
Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent gave the film a one-star review. She said how the “Evil Queen is dripping in sequins and costume jewellery, which would suggest the anticipation of a camp performance, only to receive not a drop of that in return.”
The actress’ performance was so bad she even had audiences falling asleep in theaters – though in recent news, maybe that would have made more sense for Gadot.
Marc Webb, the director, announced that Gadot was originally supposed to voice-act the role of Sleepy, one of Snow White’s seven dwarf friends. Sleepy, who is voiced by Andy Grotelueschen in the film, is known for his drowsiness, lack of facial expression and inability to speak.
“Originally we had Gadot casted in a voice acting role as one of Snow White’s dwarf friends, Sleepy,” said Webb. “We made the decision for her to be the Evil Queen after several debates from the actress herself, and her relationship with her co-star Rachel Zegler.”
Webb also said that Jack Black was originally supposed to play the role of Snow White’s wicked stepmother.
“We originally intended for Jack Black to play her role,” said Webb. “Though he was busy filming for upcoming projects.”
The actor, who is set to play the role of Steve in the film adaptation of popular video game, “Minecraft” said to the press, “I would’ve totally nailed the role of the Evil Queen, but my commitment to the world of Minecraft just left no time for me to take up the role. I would’ve rocked that look though.”
“Snow White” is now playing in theaters. If you go to see it, let’s hope you don’t fall asleep during Gadot’s musical numbers. Regardless of whether she’s a good Evil Queen, her skills, or lack thereof, would’ve been a perfect match for Sleepy. Or maybe she did a good job as the queen, since she not only made Snow White fall asleep, but also viewers.
