Danny Brown Performs at Toad’s Place
On , Nov. 17, hip-hop artist Danny Brown performed at Toad’s Place in New Haven during his uknowhatimsayin¿ Tour.
Danny Brown, who is from Detroit, first gained popularity in hip hop circles from his second studio album “XXX,” released in 2011. He has collaborated with other popular hip-hop artists such as Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, ScHoolboy Q and Eminem.
His current tour supported his fifth studio album; ‘uknowhatimsayin¿’, which features appearances from the hip-hop group Run the Jewels, and hip-hop artist JPEGMAFIA, to name a few.
There were two openers for the show: Zelooperz, who Brown has worked with in the past, and Ashnikko, who has been rapidly gaining popularity from her song “STUPID,” which went viral on the app TikTok.
Zelooperz were the first act. Most of the songs he performed were from his most recent studio album, “Dyn-o-mite’,”which was released earlier this year. His performance lasted around 20 minutes.
Ashnikko next performed nearly every song from her recently released EP “Hi, It’s Me,” a few unreleased songs, and some of her older songs. She also met with fans after the show to take pictures.
Shortly after Ashnikko performed, Brown came out and delivered his set. During his performance, he strained his voice, which he is known for. Many of his songs are rapped in his signature high-pitched voice, which sounds identical live as it does on his studio records.. The show was sequenced so he performed four or five songs from each of his recent four albums, as well as other singles.
Brown performed other songs including, “Pneumonia,” “Monopoly,” “Ain’t it Funny,” and “Die Like a Rockstar,” which are all regarded as some of Brown’s best songs.
Before he performed the final song of the set, he sat down and spoke with the crowd for a couple of minutes. He ended his set with the song “Best Life,” which was the second single from “uknowhatimsayin¿.”
