On Sunday, September 18, gunmen burst into a pub in Burundi. The Province Governor of Bujumbura, Jacques Minani, said the gunmen attacked the pub in Gatumba after crossing the river from Congo.
One survivor, Jackson Kabura, was shot in the stomach. “One of them said, ‘kill them all, kill them all. Make sure there’s no survivors.’” Kabura also stated that the men were wearing military fatigues.
Upon hearing this, Congolese military spokesman Col. Sylvain Ekenge said officials were “astonished” that the gunmen were from his country. He stated that the gunmen were most likely members of Burundi’s last rebel army, the Forces for National Liberation.
Reports have been coming in for the last year stating that the extremist Burundian Hutu rebel group is working in eastern Congo and may be readying themselves for war in Burundi. Burundi police have been attacked on many occasions. The attacks are supposedly linked to a rebellion by the group.
