Welcome back everyone. It’s time to start off the semester strong this time around and quickly get back into the swing of things. Pretty soon, we’ll all be back into a routine with lots of homework that we’ve put off starting.
As with the start of every new semester, students come back to school either looking forward to leaving home again or dreading that they have to return so early. From the moment I pulled up onto campus last Wednesday, I ran into people who asked me how my break was and then told me that their break wasn’t long enough. I completely agree, but we’re back now and there’s no use complaining about it.
Speaking of complaining people, the first day back wasn’t even over yet before I had already had it with the complaints I heard from people. Complaints about the parking, how the snow was shoveled, the new lighting in Soundview, and of course the lines at all of the dining locations were only a few of the ones I heard. Give it a rest. All of the complaining is irritating. It irritates me and it does nothing to change anything.
Do most people leave this school for break and return hoping to find a new school in its place? Do some of you actually expect that the administration is actually doing something different just because it’s the New Year? Let’s not be naive people. It’s the same school, and it’s just as far from perfect as it was when we left.
For those of you already complaining that I’m not on the student’s side, you’re wrong. I understand the problems. They bug me just as much as they bug you. Parking is horrible, lines are long, and I hate snow too. I just have a better way of going about it. I write about it and voice my complaints; I also know that that is why there is Chargervoice.com. Someone is bound to read your opinions on these issues and make sure something is done about it, even if the problem is only looked into. It’s a start.
So, with this new semester fully underway, I challenge all of you incessant complainers. If there is an issue you feel strongly about on this campus, write an editorial for the Charger Bulletin. I can tell you that your voice will be heard, and your complaint will actually make a difference. Many times have editorials been written and responded to by members of the administration who want to help. Give it a try. You will be surprised who actually listens to you. Complaining out loud doesn’t do much except irritate people to the extreme. Professionalism works better for everyone.
The University of New Haven is far from perfect. But, despite popular belief, the university does try its best to resolve the problems that arise throughout the semester. Yes, sometimes things aren’t done as quickly as some of us would like, but that doesn’t mean someone isn’t trying. Give it some time.
I look forward to reading all of the editorials throughout the semester.
