For one night, undergraduate and graduate students from all over were invited to get together in downtown New Haven for College Night on Broadway. The event took place on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 between 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and it was sponsored by Broadway Merchants Association. Since 2004, the event has brought thousands of students to enjoy the many activities planned.
Participating stores and restaurants including, but not limited to Ashley’s Ice Cream, Urban Outfitters, Enclave, Ivy Noodle, Trailblazer and Gant Campus Store offered discount prices between ten and thirty percent with student’s school ID card. Even with the cold weather, many lined up for Ashley’s free ice cream samples along with a street filled of free popcorn, giveaways and the popular $1,000 raffle. Free shirts were also given out with the raffle sign-up, and Laila Rowe participated with in-store discounts and free jewelry while supplies lasted.
While shopping, the public was accompanied with live music from Quinnipiac University’s very own, Voted Most Random. The band consists of Ian Reibeisen (vocals), Salvatore Salemme (drums), Joe Mauti (bass), Scott Gunter (lead guitar), and Chris Weiss (rhythm guitar). Starting with “Hot Mess,” the mass started gathering to watch and take pictures. The band played four sets, attracting more and more people each time. The musicians closed each set with the climatic “Can’t Stand Still,” which has an outro of solely claps and acapella singing.
Bassist Joe Mauti quotes, “Performing in New Haven was a lot of fun and a great experience. Many familiar faces surprised us as well as new people we we’re lucky enough to meet and hangout with. Overall, it was definitely a great night and really cool to have our music heard.”
All in all, it was a very successful outcome. Anyone who could not make it this year will hopefully make an effort to attend in the years to come.
