WEST HAVEN, Conn. – With 1,134 wins in his 45-year career, Frank “Porky” Vieira can add one more accomplishment to his career portfolio as the University of New Haven Department of Athletics officially retired his coaching no. 20 to the rafters in Charger Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. During a ceremony at halftime of the men’s basketball game, UNH recognized Coach Vieira for his career as just the second person in Charger history to have their number retired.
Former players, Charger fans, family and friends were on hand as Jordan Kershaw, Kyle Pettoruto and Ryan Brockett pulled the rope and unveiled Vieira’s new banner in Charger Gymnasium. Vieira thanked a number of those in attendance, including the administration, assistant coaches and all his players.
Coach Vieira retired from his coaching position following the 2006 season after starting the baseball program 45 seasons earlier and guiding the Chargers to a record of 1,134 wins- 329 losses – and six ties. That record includes a string of 43-straight winning seasons and 44 winning seasons overall.
