Chappie is the latest robot movie to hit the cinema. Many compare to Chappie to Robocop, so it seems fitting to revisit Paul Verhoevan’s 1987 action sci fi comedy. The film follows Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer who is fatally shot to death. Using new technology, the corporate run police department resurrects him as a calculating cyborg, being the first robotic cop. Using perfect tracking, Alex uses his robotic abilities to effectively take down thugs more than all of the other cops. However, Alex starts to regain his humanity as he discovers trends of his past life, and this interferes with his robotic functions. Meanwhile, the drug lord who shot Alex, Clarence Boddicker, is still performing his operations. All of Alex’s takedowns as Robocop lead him to Boddicker, who killed him in his past life. This all leads to a climatic ending. Robocop is the allegory of its time, dealing with corporate blackmail, scientific ethics, and institutionalized corruption. Also boasting wondrous gore shots, Robocop is the quintessential 1980s action movie. Spawning two sequels, Robocop was also remade last year. The remake was good in its own right, yet the 1987 Robocop always remain a classic worth watching.
