MANCHESTER, N.H. – With less than two minutes remaining in a 1-1 contest, Andres Torres (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk / Adelphi University) scored the golden goal to lead the University of New Haven men’s soccer team to a 2-1 upset victory at No. 15 Southern New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon in Manchester. Oskar Sewerin (Stockholm, Sweden/Östra Reals Gymnasium) netted the game-tying marker in the 80th minute.
With their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2008, the Chargers improve to 6-8-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the Northeast-10. New Haven defeated then-No. 9 Dowling on the road on Sept. 3, 2008. The Penmen fall to 12-3-0 with an 8-3-0 conference mark.
Torres’ golden goal came in the 109th minute to break the 1-1 deadlock. Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) received a long ball on the right sideline and streaked into the box. Southern New Hampshire goalkeeper Dom DiMaggio came out to challenge, and Dos Santos crossed the ball past him and to a streaking Torres, who redirected it into the net for the game-winner.
The goal was the fifth for Torres in his first season as a Charger. Dos Santos registered his second assist and eighth point of 2012.
After the Penmen broke a scoreless deadlock on a Kenny Doublette rebound and goal in the 79th minute, New Haven struck just 69 seconds later with the equalizer. Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) took a corner kick from the left of the goal and found Sewerin, who headed home his first collegiate marker off the near post to knot the match at 1-1 and send it into overtime.
The assist for Purcell marked his team-high fifth of the season and his third consecutive match recording a point.
Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) made a career-high 13 saves in the victory. DiMaggio did not make a stop, as both of the Chargers’ attempts on net resulted in goals.
New Haven returns to Kayo Field for two matches to wrap up the 2012 regular season. Le Moyne visits on Tuesday, Oct. 23 and Saint Anselm comes to Kayo for Senior Day on Friday, Oct. 26. Both matches will be broadcast live in high definition and available on most mobile devices on NewHavenChargers.com.
