NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men’s and women’s track & field teams opened the 2011-12 indoor season on Saturday at the 2011 Yale University Season Opener. In their first meet of the season, the Chargers posted some impressive numbers.
On the men’s team, David Thomas (Taneytown, Md./Frostburg State) won the long jump with a jump of 6.95 meters. Thomas also finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.92-seconds. Matt Jeune (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) was also impressive in the first meet of the year, finishing first in the high jump with a NCAA provisional qualifying height of 2.06 meters. Jeune also finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.31 meters. In the 1,000 meter run, Arnold Lane (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) led the way for UNH with a time of 2:42.57, finishing third overall. Kevin Downing (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt) finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.01 seconds.
To lead the women’s team, Shraya Manick (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) finished in fourth place in the weight throw and sixth in the shot put. She threw 15.75 meters in the weight throw and a shot put of 11.71 meters. Tiara Mitchell won the triple jump with a distance of 11.26 meters and finished eight in the long jump. Briana Conyers added a second place finish in the triple jump and 11th in the long jump.
New Haven will return to action on Sunday, December 11 when it travels to SCSU for the annual alumni meet.
