WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team defeated Holy Family University in three sets Friday night (25-15, 25-15, 25-19). With the win the Chargers improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 4-12.
New Haven took a quick lead in each of the first two sets on Friday. They led 15-10 in both sets and they scored 10 of the last 15 points to seal the 25-10 victories.
In the third set, the game was played much closer. The teams played to a 14-14 tie, before the Tigers took a 15-14 lead, their only lead of the match. UNH then scored six unanswered points to take a 20-15 lead late in the set. Holy Family got as close as three at 17-20 and 18-21 before the Chargers took a 25-19 win.
Sara Malmlov led the Chargers with 14 kills on 31 attempts with two errors (.387 hitting percentage). She also led the UNH defense with nine digs. Sophomore Elizabeth Akinbiyi added 10 kills on 15 attempts with three errors (.467 hitting percentage) and four total blocks. Chelsey Alpough handed out 29 assists.
The UNH offense hit at a .295 clip, while holding the Tigers to a .080 hitting percentage.
The University of New Haven Chargers will be returning to action on Wednesday, Sept. 23 when they host Pace University in their Northeast-10 Conference season opener.
Game time is set for 7:00pm at the Charger Gymnasium in North Campus.
