After two wins earlier this week against Caldwell University and Saint Thomas Aquinas College, the Chargers hosted the Assumption University Greyhounds for a doubleheader. New Haven went into the conference matchup with a record of 4-10, as they looked to add more to the win column.
In game one, the Chargers lost a nail biter with a 1-0 score. Assumption scored their first and only run in the top of the first inning on a fielder’s choice after moving into scoring position on a fielding error by the shortstop.
New Haven’s starting pitcher, sophomore Breanna Kinney, completed the game, and allowed six hits with one strikeout and one unearned run. Assumption’s pitchers did just enough to squeak by with the win, as they struck out four and walked four across seven innings.
On the offensive side, the Chargers collected a total of five hits as a team, with senior outfielder Olivia Roberto leading with two singles. Peyton Sullivan, Brianna Trueman and Emily Ricci also added one base hit each. Trueman, along with Bella Chenet and Lucia Ceccarelli drew walks as well, but the Chargers were unable to scratch the tying run on the board.
The Chargers found the same result in game two as the Greyhounds won,12-3.
Assumption jumped on the board early again and scored on a single to center field. Two more runs rounded out the top half of the first inning for the Greyhounds. New Haven’s offense found themselves on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second, but would face an uphill battle as Assumption had a three-run lead by that point. The Chargers scored one more run in the fifth inning, but the Greyhounds held onto their advantage.
The offense was driven by hits from Chenet, Roberto, Trueman, Ricci and Stephanie Smith. Ceccarelli led the team after she collected two hits and Smith tallied two RBIs while Trueman also collected one RBI.
The Chargers also hosted the Chestnut Hill College Griffins for a double header on Sunday and had a complete sweep. In the first game, the Chargers shut out the Griffins with an 8-0 win as Trueman led New Haven with three hits and an RBI. In the second game, the Chargers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning and didn’t look back as they secured a 6-2 win to finish the weekend 2-2.
With a quick turnaround, the Chargers look to get back into the win column as they host another double-header against the College of Staten Island on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at the New Haven Softball Field. For more information, please visit NewHavenChargers.com.
