The Chargers extended their win streak with a dominant 16-6 win over the Bentley University Falcons last week.
Prior to the conference match-up, several of the women’s lacrosse team alumni from the past two decades were honored at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
Early in the first quarter, the Falcons took control of the game with an unassisted goal by Natalia Dutkewych. After a series of back and forth attempts from New Haven and Bentley, the Chargers asserted dominance with five consecutive goals during the remainder of the first quarter. Midfielder Katie Schenk scored the first goal for the Chargers in a man-up situation.
After a turnover from Bentley’s Sophia Pope, midfielder Helena Dunwoody struck the back of the net. Schenk scored an additional two goals, the first being a free-position shot that got past Bentley’s goalkeeper, Ashlee Wargo. Bentley committed a foul with over a minute remaining in the quarter which resulted in a goal from a free-position shot by midfielder Gianna Caprioli. Bentley closed out the quarter with a goal from Caitlin Keenan with under 30 seconds remaining.
In the second quarter, the Falcons were able to get two shots past New Haven’s goalkeeper, Madeline Sage. Bentley’s Amanda Davis scored both goals, but the Chargers quickly countered with a goal from Schenk. The remainder of the quarter saw both teams taking several attempts at goal, but neither the Chargers or Falcons were able to put points on the board. New Haven entered halftime with a 6-4 lead over Bentley.
In the third quarter, the Chargers’ offense stood strong with seven goals, while the Falcons were unable to score. Dunwoody scored two consecutive goals, the first during a man-up situation followed by an unassisted shot. Attacker Lindsey Belmonte followed with a pair of goals within a minute. Sage had a save for the Chargers followed by another goal from Dunwoody assisted by attacker Caitlin Seleny. After a foul on Bentley, Schenk scored a free-position shot and Dunwoody closed out the quarter with her fifth goal of the game.
The Chargers’ momentum continued as Schenk and Seleny scored in the early minutes of the final quarter. Bentley’s Maeve Jonhson took charge for the Falcons and scored their first goal since halftime. Shortly after, Davis added the Falcons last goal of the game off an assist from Pope. Both teams took a series of attempts at goal but with just over a minute remaining, Dunwoody scored off an assist from midfielder Emma Cretella. Schenk and Dunwoody both finished the game with six goals against the Falcons.
New Haven finished the game with 29 shots while Bentley was right behind with 25. The Falcons took possession 15 times compared to the Chargers’ 10. New Haven committed seven turnovers and had 10 saves.
After the win against the Falcons, New Haven has an overall record of 9-3 and remains undefeated, 6-0, in conference play. The Chargers will be back in action on Tuesday as they host the American International College Yellow Jackets for a conference match-up. Draw control is set for 4 p.m. at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
