The Chargers broke records and beat two of their Northeast-10 rivals when they raced at the Armory in New York City, Friday, January 18.
The University of New Haven’s men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Great Dane Classic sponsored by the University at Albany.
The University of New Haven men’s track and field team was the top Division II team and finished 10th overall out of 24 teams. The Chargers defeated NE-10 rivals Adelphi and Southern Connecticut State, and outscored five Division I teams at the meet.
Senior David Thomas lead the men’s track and field team with a third place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds, a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.54 seconds, and another sixth place finish after jumping 7.10 meters in the long jump. Thomas met NCAA provisional qualifying standards in all three events.
On the distance side, freshmen Chad Messam and Devin Rose, sophomore Ryan Parris and senior Arnold Lane finished sixth place in the distance medley relay (DMR) with a time of 11:23.39 minutes. The DMR is a relay consisting of varying distances including the 1,200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, and concluding with the mile.
Lane also competed in the men’s 1000-meter run and finished with a time of 2:43.55 minutes.
The men also competed in the 4×400-meter race. The relay consisted of sophomore Nazim Roberts-Smith, sophomore Brandon Fowler, freshman Jamaal James, and sophomore Joe Kingston. The team finished with a time of 3:26.25 minutes and placed 17th overall.
Sophomore Briana Conyers and junior Ada Udaya lead the women’s team when they each respectively broke a program record. Overall, the women’s team finished ninth out of 21 teams by scoring 26 points, setting them ahead of NE-10 rivals Southern Connecticut and Adelphi as well as eight Division I teams.
Conyers placed second in the triple jump, breaking her own program record with a distance of 12.25 meters. Conyers’ jump met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard in the event. In addition to her personal accomplishment, Conyers will be invited to compete at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 8 and 9 in Birmingham, Ala.
Conyers also placed seventh in the long jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 5.55 meters.
Udaya achieved two NCCA provisional qualifying times in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. She finished third in both races with a time of 7.51 seconds in the 60-meter dash, which was also a program record, and 24.71 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
As a freshman, Udaya had run a 60-meter dash of 7.53 seconds at the 2011 national championships. Her “above sea level” mark shared the record with the 7.57-second “sea level” program record set at Armory by Shannon Gagne. Udaya’s time topped both former UNH records.
Udaya was also a leg of the women’s 4×400-meter relay team, along with sophomore Ivy Watts, freshman Jasmin Belcher and junior Monica Yanez. The relay team finished ninth with a time of 4:03.92 minutes.
Watts also competed in the 400-meter dash and finished 13 overall with a time of 58.61 seconds.
The women finished sixth in the distance medley relay with a time of 13:43.64 minutes. The team consisted of sophomore Samantha Mathewson, freshman Olivia Tagney, senior Bridget Faria and sophomore Danielle Sorrentino.
Sorrentino also competed in the 3000-meter run, and finished with a time of 11:25.28 minutes.
The Chargers compete next at the BU Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University Friday, Jan. 25.
