The Chargers women’s basketball team tipped off against the Adelphi Panthers in an NE10 Conference matchup and won, 57-42. The Chargers entered the game on a three-game win streak with a record of 16-9 and 11-8 inside the NE10. For Adelphi, they came into the game following a win, with a record of 13-13 and 9-10 inside the NE10. The Chargers, currently in third place in the NE10, needed a win to continue their hot streak.
The first quarter saw a back-and-forth start with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. New Haven took an early lead with a jumper from Paige Cote, but Adelphi quickly responded with a basket from Victoria Morgan. Both teams had difficulty shooting as there were several missed layups and three-pointers. New Haven regained the lead with a layup from Lindsay Hogan, but Adelphi briefly took a one point advantage after a three-pointer from Christina Sanchez. New Haven answered with another layup from Hogan and a three-pointer. The quarter concluded with Adelphi attempting a fastbreak layup from Isabella Asencio, but New Haven held a slim 9-7 lead as the first quarter ended.
In the second quarter, both teams had a late offensive start. After several missed shots, Aniya McDonald-Perry made a free throw and jumper to extend New Haven’s lead to 12-9. Adelphi’s Sanchez tied the game after a shot from behind the arc but New Haven’s Schuyler Coles quickly responded with a layup. Cote then scored a jumper and a fastbreak three-pointer which pushed New Haven’s lead to 19-14. After a timeout, Adelphi was able to narrow the gap with a fastbreak layup from Sanchez and a free-throw shot from Asencio. New Haven’s Cote secured two free throws which sent the Chargers into halftime with a 21-17 advantage.
In the third quarter, New Haven extended their lead significantly with a series of fast breaks and effective shooting. Hogan secured an early layup followed by a quick basket from Charlotte Bassett and another from Hogan, which advanced the lead to 27-21. New Haven’s momentum continued as they made a series of successful shots, including a jumper from McDonald-Perry as well as a three-pointer and free throw by Bassett which extended the lead to 39-21. Adelphi struggled to respond and New Haven’s defense kept them off the scoreboard. A fastbreak layup by Cote, followed by another layup from Bassett increased the lead to 44-21. The quarter ended with New Haven firmly in control asAdelphi failed to gain any ground, despite a few missed attempts and turnovers.
New Haven maintained their dominant performance throughout the fourth quarter and continued to build on their lead with key plays from Charlotte Bassett, Paige Cote and Lindsay Hogan. Despite some late efforts from Adelphi, including three-pointers from Kaitlyn O’Connell and a dunk by Ariana Kupi, New Haven’s defense and consistent scoring kept them comfortably ahead.
On Sunday, the Chargers hosted the Assumption University Greyhounds for the first round of the NE10 conference championship, but lost 57-54.
