BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – A goal by Andres Torres (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk / Adelphi University) just three minutes into the match set the tone as the University of New Haven men’s soccer team scored twice in the first half to knock off host Dowling, 2-1, in the Chargers’ final non-conference match of the season. Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) posted a goal and an assist in the victory.
With the win, New Haven moves to 4-5-1 on the season. The Golden Lions drop to 2-8-1.
Anastasios Petridis (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon ) made two saves to earn the win in goal. The Chargers outshot Dowling, 15-12.
Torres’ goal came on the first shot attempted by either club. Purcell crossed the ball into the box, where Torres found it from just three yards out and fired the orb past Dowling keeper Matt Bonomini to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
Torres, who also scored in the 4-4 draw at Bentley on Saturday, runs his 2012 season and Charger career marks to four goals and nine total points.
Purcell netted the eventual game-winner just before halftime. The graduate student was awarded a free kick in the 43rd minute and put the try from 23 yards out into the back of the net to run the advantage to 2-0.
Purcell’s three-point night gives him two goals and four assists on the season and runs his point streak to three-straight matches. In his 27-match career with the Blue and Gold, he has racked up 10 total points.
Dowling would disrupt the clean sheet in the 83rd minute on a goal by Justin Fitzpatrick, but the Chargers’ back row did not allow a shot in the final 7:38 to lock up the 2-1 victory.
Northeast-10 action resumes on Saturday, Oct. 6 under the lights at Kayo Field with a 7 p.m. contest against Franklin Pierce. The match will be broadcast live in high definition and available on most mobile devices on NewHavenChargers.com.
