On Wednesday, Oct. 23, the New Haven Chargers faced off against the Saint Anselm Hawks in a very contested match at Melucci Field. The game ended in a 0-0 draw and marked a hard fought match between both teams.
The match began with both teams exhibiting strong defense. New Haven made a significant effort on the offensive end and took 13 shots throughout the game, with four being on target. Saint Anselm recorded six total shots, with only two of them being on target. Chargers goalkeeper Archie Watts showcased a very impressive game and had two key saves that kept the Hawks from scoring.
In the first half, the Chargers dominated possession and registered nine shots compared to Saint Anselm’s two. Despite their efforts, New Haven couldn’t convert any chances into goals, as the Hawks’ goalkeeper, David Hood, made four crucial saves to keep the game tied.
As the match progressed into the second half, the intensity picked up. The Chargers maintained their offensive pressure and generated four additional shots. However, they struggled to find the back of the net. Meanwhile the Hawks ramped up their own offensive efforts with four shots, but were unable to break through the Chargers defense.
Fouls were a notable aspect of the match, with the Chargers committing 14 fouls to Saint Anselms’ nine. This physicality led to several cautions, including yellow cards for New Haven’s defender Anthony Denis, midfielders Adam Lindstrom and Albert Porqueras, alongside a yellow card for Saint Anselm’s Lucas Bravo Olle and Michael Provenzano.
Despite both teams pushing for a late winner, the match concluded in a stalemate, with neither side able to capitalize on their opportunities. New Haven’s strong defensive play and Watts’ goalkeeping were pivotal in securing the draw. On Oct. 26 the Chargers took on the College of Staten Island where they won 4-1. New Haven’s overall record is 9-3-2, and 4-2-1 in conference play.
The Chargers will look to build on this result as they prepare for their next match against the Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Nov. 1. New Haven will host SNHU for their final home regular season conference game. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
