Last week, the Chargers played three double-headers against the College of Staten Island (CSI) Dolphins, Mercy University Mavericks and American International College (AIC) Yellow Jackets, respectively and finished 2-4.
On Tuesday, the Chargers had a strong start as they took game one against the CSI Dolphins with a 7-3 score. The Dolphins had an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Chargers advanced in the third inning off a single to left field by Bella Chenet. In the same inning, catcher Brianna Trueman singled to center field and brought in two more runs. In the third inning, the Chargers put up six runs and the Dolphins were able to counter with two in the fourth inning, but it wasn’t enough to erase the deficit.
On the mound, Breanna Kinney and Katie Rhodes put together strong performances as they both pitched over three innings. Kinney gave up five hits, two runs and a strikeout. Rhodes gave up six hits and one run in relief.
The rest of the week would unfortunately see a four game skid before they collected win number eight of the year in game two of Saturday’s match-up.
Against the Mercy Mavericks, the Chargers fell short 9-1 in the first game and 6-0 in the second. In the first game, the Mavericks scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth while the Chargers struggled offensively. The Chargers’ Skylar Griffin threw 65 pitches after facing 20 at bats and Mariza Johnson closed the game for New Haven but gave up four hits and two runs. In the second game, the Chargers had four total hits but were unable to score any runs.
On Saturday, it was an all-around team effort as the Chargers won their second game against AIC with a commanding 9-1 score after losing the first game of the day. The scoring started off in the first inning when Trueman grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Chenet scored. Another run would cross home plate after Emily Ricci hit a double. The Chargers took an early lead in the second inning and didn’t look back as they put up six runs. On a Trueman single, two more runs would score as well as another run that Ricci drove in. Peyton Sullivan hit a three run homerun and later in the fifth inning, Chenet drove in another run on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman Katie Rhodes would collect her third win of the year, after she pitched a complete game. In her five innings of work, Rhodes gave up four hits, one run and had two strikeouts.
The Chargers collected 10 total team hits with four walks and only struck out twice which helped with the commanding win.
After the trio of doubleheaders, the Chargers have an overall record of 8-16 and 1-1 in conference play. The Chargers are set to face the Post University Eagles on Thursday for a non-conference double header. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at LaMoy Field.
