WEST HAVEN, Conn. – University of New Haven sophomore right-hander John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) threw eight
shutout innings as the Charger baseball team defeated The College of Saint Rose 5-0 Saturday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series. The Chargers improved to 19-14-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division. The Golden Knights dropped to 11-25 overall and 3-10 in divisinal play.
The Chargers attacked the bats in the final game of the series against Saint Rose. In the bottom of the fourth inning, UNH opened scoring with a sacrifice fly by Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) to left field. Senior Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored the run from third base and put UNH ahead 1-0. The run would eventually be the game-winning run.
After three outs and one walk in the Golden Knights’ next inning, the game headed into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Chargers scored their second run after Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) hit a deep two-out triple to right field. He later scored off a throwing error by the third baseman to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead.
The sixth inning was scoreless at Vieira Field, while the Golden Knights managed just one base runner in the top of the seventh inning. UNH sealed the victory in the bottom of the seventh with three runs off two hits and one Saint Rose error. DeMorais started the rally with a one-out double to center field. Brendan O’Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) then walked and Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) hit a double to left center, driving in the third run. Back-to-back unearned runs then scored for UNH, one by Clout off an error and one by Carr off a wild pitch to increase the lead to 5-0.
Saint Rose managed one base runner in the top of the eighth and loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth, but the UNH defense and pitching buckled down and sealed the shutout.
Melville fanned four and allowed seven hits in his third win of the season. Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) threw the ninth inning for UNH and struckout two batters.
At the plate, Carr led the team with two hits and two runs in three at-bats, while DeMorais added two hits and two runs in four at-bats.
Prior to the Saturday’s game, the Chargers recognized their eight graduating seniors. Photo gallery and video of the event will be available shortly.
