Coming off a win against American International College on Saturday, Sept. 30, the New Haven field hockey team was looking to gain some momentum. On Sunday, Oct. 1, the Chargers faced off against Bloomsburg College with the hopes of starting a win streak. The Huskies had other plans, as they dominated the Chargers scoring four unanswered goals throughout the game.
It was a slow offensive game for the Chargers as they were outshot 21-8, with just seven shots to Bloomsburg’s 19 being on goal. It was not for a lack of defense that New Haven came out with a loss as goalkeepers Ally Saigh and Hallie Reiger tallied 15 combined saves. Working with constant pressure from the Huskies, both goalkeepers did an excellent job in keeping the Chargers in this game.
The Huskies got off to a hot start as forward Genna Bush, assisted by forward Aydan McFarland, scored the first goal of the game barely three minutes into the game. Five minutes later, the Huskies would double their lead as McFarland would score a goal of her own, assisted by defender Lillie Weaver. That would be all for the first quarter as New Haven only mustered five shots.
Both the second and third quarters would be relatively quiet as no goals were scored between both teams. The middle quarters proved to be more evenly matched, as the Chargers defense remained strong with six saves on six shots from the Huskies. The offense still struggled, failing to register a single shot in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter would be when the offense picked up once again, but at the expense of the Chargers. The defense was able to make another four saves, but it wasn’t enough as Bush and McFarland combined for another goal to make it 3-0. The finishing blow would come with nearly a minute left, as midfielder Alyxandra Flick, assisted by midfielder Sam Schaffer, would make the game 4-0.
New Haven didn’t have any answers against this Huskies team as they fell 4-0. The Chargers have now scored a total of 4 goals in their last 4 games, including Sunday’s loss. The Chargers fall to 3-7 on the year and 3-2 at home. They’ll look to regroup and get some momentum against Southern Connecticut State University. Southern is currently 4-5 on the year, but is running on a 3-game win streak. The Chargers will look to snap that streak and start their own Oct. 4 on the road at 7:00 pm. When the game starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4. More information can be found at NewHavenChargers.com.
