On Friday, the New Haven women’s tennis team dominated the Post University Eagles at home. With nine matches, including three doubles and six single games, the Chargers shut out the Eagles and finished 7-0.
With the win against Post, the Chargers now have a three-game winning streak as they come to the end of the season.
Junior Karim Carreras said it comes from the team’s foundation on maintaining motivation to play in both singles and doubles matches.
“Before we start the match, we get together with the team and agree to fight for every single point no matter what the situation is,” said Carreras. “We all cheer for each other and that helps us stay motivated as well.”
The first pair of doubles included Carreras and sophomore Valentinna Ferrarini. They won their match 6-1. Following the duo was graduate student Lucia Placidi and junior Risako Umekuni, who won 6-2 and secured the win for New Haven. In the final doubles match, the Chargers fell to the Eagles 6-4.
In the singles matches, the Chargers had an all-around victory. The first match was a win for Ferrarini against Post’s Annunciata De-Souza. In the first set, Ferrarini broke the tiebreaker and finished with a score of 10-1. In the second set, she came through with a narrow 7-6 win.
Carreras dominated the second singles match with a complete sweep. Against Post’s Oceane Mallevre, Carreras finished both sets, 6-0.
Competing in the third singles match, Umekuni won the first set 7-5 and the second 6-1. In the fourth singles match, sophomore Alyssa Rodriguez won both sets against her opponent Nina Langenfeld with scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Placidi secured another point for New Haven in the fifth singles as she won her first set 6-2 and ended the match 6-0 in the second set.
In the final singles match, freshman Agustina Ravera dominated. Against opponent, Julia D’Occhio, Ravera won both sets 6-2.
“We are all on the same page, we have a mentality of wanting it more,” said Carreras. “We put a lot of heart into the matches that we play and that’s what shows a difference from other teams and comparing results with last year’s season.”
The Chargers now stand at 13-4 and 7-1 in Northeast-10 play. New Haven will take the court again on Wednesday as they host the Baruch College Bearcats for their final regular season match. The first serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the New Haven Tennis Courts. For more information, go to NewHavenChargers.com.
