For many people, the day they look forward to most is their birthday, Christmas or Halloween.
This is not the case for fans of Taylor Swift. The day they have all been waiting for the past several months arrived on Wednesday, when Swift released her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” and the university rang in the event with a listening party at the German Club.
The SCOPE-sponsored event provided Taylor-themed prizes and friendship bracelet-making to get revelers in a “Marjorie” mindset (a song from Swift’s ninth album that was inspired by her opera-singing grandmother).
At first glance, the album, which industry watchers expect will beat her previous astronomic sales records, includes 16 songs with two collaborations featuring Post Malone and Florence and the Machine.
My personal favorite is “The Alchemy,” which focuses on the star’s relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who is also a favorite of mine. Some other fan favorites from the album are “Down Bad,” a slow, delicate song. When I listened to it for the first time, I reflected a lot on her lyrics. The song explores finding self-worth when you’re deemed not enough by societal expectations and partners. “Fortnight,” an upbeat collaboration with Post Malone, gives insight on how to deal with loving someone you can’t have. In general, Poets Department dissects relationships, personal growth and healing as the songs reflect on the past, with an eye on building a stronger future.
At the listening event, Swifties came decked out in spirit wear from bright pink to the rest of the rainbow. A common theme for such an event is to dress to reflect an album’s vibe. Fans came to the German Club wearing outfits that ranged from “Folklore” to “1989” to “Lover.” Friends from all over campus came to stay for an hour that felt like the New Year’s Eve ball drop.
This album will keep everyone on their toes, searching for their next heartfelt song. What will her lucky 13th album be? All we know is the world cannot wait to see it.
