On Saturday, the New Haven lacrosse team hosted the Molloy University Lions and were able to mount a comeback, finishing the game 11-9. The game was held in dedication for Morgan’s Message, a nonprofit organization that seeks to break the stigma around student athlete’s mental health.
“The unfortunate event of Morgan’s passing has brought awareness about mental health in athletics,” said midfielder Ivanna Hernandez. “As a team, it formed a culture where we support each other on and off the field.”
“Through thick and thin, we will have each other’s back,” she said.
New Haven entered the second half trailing behind by two, but their persistent offense in the third quarter helped them to secure a comeback with five straight goals. Seven Chargers struck the back of the net during Saturday’s match.
Attack Cameryn Antler led New Haven with three goals and all shots in the third quarter. Following behind was midfielder Ivanna Hernandez, who scored two goals and added an assist for another point. Both of Hernandez’s goals were from the eight-meter position.
The final Charger with multiple goals was midfielder Gianna Caprioli, in which her shot in the third quarter gave New Haven the lead. She later scored her second goal in the fourth quarter.
Attacks Kyra Sparks and Lindsey Belmonte alongside midfielders Katie Schenk and Summer Castiglione each added one goal of their own. Attack Cailtin Seleny had a single assist in the third quarter.
Again, the Chargers dominated in the draw circle winning the battle 19-4 against the Lions. The duo Cypress Levitt and Katie Schenk each won seven draws of their own. New Haven had one penalty while Molloy tallied up a total of six.
Goalkeeper Gabby Buscemi finished the game with 11 saves after playing the entire 60 minutes. Molloy’s goalkeeper Mary-Kate Sweeney was right behind with 10 saves.
“When half time approached and we’re down by two, it was difficult to come to terms with, but it pushed us to go even harder and trust in each other more,” said Hernandez. “Changing our mindsets to ‘Do it for the person next to you’ encouraged us to fight for a team win.”
With the win against the Molloy Lions, New Haven’s record now stands at 7-4 and 5-2 in the NE-10 conference play. With just five games remaining in the regular season, New Haven is currently tied for fourth in the Northeast-10 conference.
The Chargers will take the road on Tuesday to face the Saint Rose Golden Knights. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on the Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. For more information, please visit NewHavenChargers.com.
