On Wednesday, New Haven defeated the Assumption University Greyhounds, 19-16. In a balanced, back-and-forth matchup, Assumption tied the game at nine in the second quarter before New Haven took the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Chargers were coming off a 13-11 loss against Saint Anselm which pushed their record to 5-4. With the remainder of the season and the Northeast-10 (NE-10) conference Championship ahead of them, attack Cameryn Antler emphasized the importance of playing for one another.
“Working together as a team and starting the game with energy is a huge part of our success during our next game against Assumption,” said Antler. “These two games allowed us to realize the potential we have for the rest of the season and the importance of relying on one another to win.”
For the third straight game, midfielder Katie Schenk led the team with six goals, secured a hat trick and added an assist for seven points. Schenk is one of seven Chargers who tallied points against the Greyhounds and one out of four players who netted a hat trick.
Midfielder Ivanna Hernandez followed behind Schenk with three goals, a hat trick and an assist to tally four points. Attack Caitlin Seleny had four points as she scored two goals in the second and third quarter alongside two assists.
Antler and midfielder Summer Castiglione both had three goal hat tricks of their own. Adding to their dominant offense, midfielder Gianna Caprioli and attack Kyra Sparks each scored one goal.
The Chargers dominated the draw circle winning the battle 26-13. Schenk secured a season high of ten draws and close behind was midfielder Cypress Levitt with nine of her own. Castiglione ended the game with six draws. Both New Haven and Assumption tallied up a pair of penalties.
Greyhounds midfielder Katelynn Johnston racked up five goals, yet New Haven was on top of their defense with key plays from defenders Justine Doyle and Laura Agbayani and midfielder Rylee Donnellan. New Haven’s goalkeeper Gabby Buscemi finished the game with five saves after playing the full 60 minutes. Assumption’s goalkeeper Skylar Troyan made eight saves throughout the game.
“The games where we have seen the most success is when everyone can become involved in both offense and defense,” said Antler. “A lot of the teams in the NE-10 are strong this year, so we have to be prepared to play our hardest in every game in order to win.”
With the strong win, New Haven advanced to 6-4 and 4-2 in conference play. For more information, please visit NewHavenChargers.com.
