There were so many action and superhero movies released over the summer that students may have missed a few, but if they missed Captain America they could have caught it last week because it was SCOPE’s Film Committee movie of the week. On Tuesday and Friday, the Bartels Café was filled with students that wanted to see The First Avenger, from a Marvel comic series, come to life on the big screen.
The movie lived up to expectations and was packed with action, those one-liners that all superheroes say, and, of course, romance. Chris Evans plays Steve Rogers, who wants to fight in World War II but is deemed unfit for service. In order to become fit to fight in the war, he undergoes an experiment that enhances his body making him faster, stronger, and just all around a better soldier. At first he is used as a publicity stunt for the army, but when the Germans start winning the war Rogers realizes that his comrades need him and starts fighting. A true American: an American that can only be deemed Captain America.
The movie was great, and basing it in the 1940’s, which is when Captain America was originally set in the comics, was the perfect move by the filmmakers. Everyone involved in the movie put a lot of effort into the movie. There were great special effects, actors, and stunts! A little, very knowledgeable, birdie (Ryan Christopher) even told me that they really built the car that was in the movie, and it really worked. It did have one tiny flaw: it had a turning radius of about 40 feet, which is really not good for city driving, but it was really cool in the movie. It was all that intense attention to detail that made this one of the Marvel superhero classics.
After seeing this movie, students are on edge for the actual avenger movie, which this movie is the preface of. If this movie was great, can you imagine what the avenger movie is going to be like? It should be legendary! Of course there are more movies coming from SCOPE’s Film Committee, so stayed tuned!
