A former Mississippi State player, Kenny Rogers, says that Cecil Newton told him it would take anywhere from $100,000 to $180,000 for his son Cam Newton to sign a scholarship to Mississippi State, according to ESPN.com. Rogers told Dallas ESPN radio 103.3 KESN-FM last Friday during a telephone interview “I never asked schools for money to place players,” he said, according to www.sportingnews.com. “Heck, no, I’ve never done that. A school has never paid me for a kid. An alumni has never paid me for a kid. Period, point blank.”
This week, Rogers decided to come back on the air again for another interview on ESPN Radio 103.3 in Dallas to try to clear up this matter, and he told Fitzsimmons the following: “I don’t trust anybody now,” said Rogers, according to ESPN.com. “I asked Cecil if he needed my help to get Cam Newton into college and what Cam’s plans [were]? Cecil and I and two other coaches met at a hotel in Starkville Mississippi last November 27, and Cecil asked about the payment of Cam between $100,000 to $180,000.” The two coaches are unidentified.
Later on in the interview, the Rogers was asked a series of questions. “Why did all of a sudden the Newtons’ stop dealing with you? Were they using you as a go between for Mississippi State?” Rogers replied that he didn’t know. “We talked and nothing was ever done. Everything faded away. Nothing went down and that was pretty much it, and now Cam is going to Auburn.”
Cam left the Florida Gators in the 2008 following season and Cecil, Cam Newton’s father, told Rogers, “It’s not going to be free this time,” according to Cecil, meaning that the price was between $100,000 to $180,000. “If Rogers solicited money, he did it all on his own,” Cecil said, according to ESPN.com. Rogers said he never solicited any money nor did he get any money. “That’s why I wanted to talked to you all again. This was bothering [me] for six, seven, or eight days now. No, it didn’t happen for sure,” said Rogers.
“I’m not going to entertain something that took place not three months, not six months, not even a year, but two years ago,” said Cam Newton, according to ESPN.com. “I’m not going to sit up here and say anything about it. I’m not going to beat a dead horse talking about it. It’s not going to affect me any way shape or fashion.”
Auburn Head Coach, Gene Chizik addressed the media last week by saying. “I’m standing up here on a very important week trying to defend something that’s pure garbage,” Chizik said, according to ESPN.com. According to www.desmoinesregister.com he said, “I will say this very loud and very clear. Cam Newton is eligible at Auburn University period. End of story,” Chizik said Thursday night on his weekly radio show.
The questions that have to be considered are as follows. Did Cam and Cecil Newton receive extra benefits from Auburn University? If these reports are true, will Cam Newton become an ineligible player?
Cam Newton also has allegations with the Florida Gators. He was caught cheating on a test and put his name on another student’s paper. He was caught cheating again when one of his papers came from the Internet. He was arrested for stealing a $1,700 laptop, later throwing it out of his window because he got scared when the police were questioning him and the investigators attempted to verify the serial numbers on the device. The charges were burglary, larceny, and obstruction of justice.
