Presented by the University of New Haven theatre club, Cabaret III debuted on Friday October 7, and again on Sunday October 9 in Bucknall Theater. Not to be confused with the Broadway musical Cabaret, a cabaret can be any form of entertainment. For the past two semesters the U.N.H. theatre club has put on a Cabaret.
This show featured songs from various Broadway productions including Hamilton, Once: The Musical, Fiddler on the Roof and more.
“For this one I listened to a bunch of musicals and took what I knew of the cast and tried to find what would be the most interesting and challenging for them,” he said. He continued saying, “I knew the songs were challenging and they took what they got and gave it their all and I’m really proud of them it came out stronger than I imagined,” director Jared Reynolds says.
Reynolds was not the only one excited for the night. Many cast members were eager to take the stage and show off all of their hard work.
Cast member and Chrislyn Webster said, “Cabaret was my first university experience with the theatre club, and I must say – it was one of the most amazing first experiences I’ve ever had!! It literally, made me so happy to be back on stage officially and I can’t wait to do it all again on Sunday.”
Cast member Destiny LaPointe had similar feelings, saying, “Cabaret was my first theater production ever in my life and it was fitting for me to reach out of my comfort zone and do something I’ve never done before with the most amazing cast, crew and just overall people. I wouldn’t trade this moment for anything in the world.”
Once 7:30 p.m. hit mostly all the seats were filled and everyone was ready for the show to start. The audience’s attention was quickly grabbed when the cast came down the stairs before reaching the stage. The show started with the song Aquarius from Hair. Between each song narrator Joshua Lodge came onto the stage and made the audience laugh as well as explained which song would be coming next. After each song the cast sang, and a huge audience applause followed. The show ended with songs from the hit Broadway musical Hamilton performed by the whole cast. As the show came to an end the whole cast got a standing ovation.
Audience member Pepper Lavoie said, “I thought it was absolutely amazing and that they did an amazing job.”
Overall, the show was funny, and entertaining. If you missed your chance to see it this semester, be sure to catch it next semester!
