The Black Student Union hosted an off campus trip to New York City to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. After advertisement was made around campus through the organization’s Facebook event page and through Charger Connection, students were expected to sign up online at 9:00 p.m. and not a moment sooner.
At 6:30 a.m. on Dec.10, 42 students stood in front of Maxcy Hall anxiously waiting to depart for the show. Executive board members of BSU, Speruthia Jeantel, Cora St. Marie, Shniqua Christian, Calvin Knight, Shenika Burton, and Janine Jean-Pierre all made sure precautionary announcements were made before students could leave the bus.
As the lights dimmed and the orchestra started to play, the famous New York City Rockettes made their appearance alongside Santa Claus as this act was carried out in 3-D. Famous acts like the Nutcracker, Twelve days of Christmas, and the Nativity Scene were brought to a packed- hall crowd. The 14 act show amazed much of the audience as the musical numbers and tricks performed on stage were well executed to bring in the holiday spirit. Students were given a free voucher to take home their very own Christmas ornament from the gift stands in Radio City Hall.
“Although the show was early, and it was geared towards younger kids,” Morgan Kotnik, a senior at UNH said, “I did enjoy watching the ballet numbers and watching the tin soldiers slowly fall down, it was cool.”
The show ended just in time for students to walk around New York City and take pictures under the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, before boarding the bus back to campus. Students were gathered back on the bus and accounted for before the bus had the chance to pull off.
“My goals for the students were that they would enjoy the show, and have a whole new experience for those who never been to New York City around the holiday season,” Speruthia Jeantel, treasurer of BSU said.
BSU hopes that the students who attended this trip enjoyed themselves and hopefully saw the types of events that this organization holds for the student body.
