In the 2024 NBA draft, Bronny James was drafted as the 55th pick in the second round to the Los Angeles Lakers. James was drafted after his first year of college at the University of South Carolina. This was big news for fans of the NBA, because James is the son of one of the greatest NBA players of all time: LeBron James. Although many anticipated Bronny James’ entrance into the NBA, he instantly transferred into the G League within a couple games, so many wonder if Bronny James’ NBA career is already over.
Bronny James overcame many obstacles in his life, both on and off the court. After he was accepted and had enrolled into the University of South Carolina, James had a heart attack while practicing with his team. He was later diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. After five months of recovery, James was cleared to return to his basketball team and was ready to start playing in games. When James started playing again, he had to readjust to playing basketball. After his cardiac arrest, James only averaged four points per game, but was able to declare for the NBA draft after the season was over.
When Bronny James declared for the NBA draft, it raised concern for many NBA fans because he had lower statistics in college and was still developing as a basketball player. Another concern was James’ recovery from his still recent cardiac arrest. Fans would often claim that the only reason he was drafted in the NBA was because his father is Lebron James, with many calling him “Nepotism Baby.” However, this didn’t stop James from going out to live his NBA dream. Bronny James was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, creating the first father-son duo in NBA history.
When Bronny James started playing in the NBA, he was surrounded by the media, with many waiting to see what James can do and whether he can live up to the same legacy as his father. However, James had a rough start with the Lakers, only scoring four points in total after his first season. With Bronny James unable to succeed in the NBA, he was instantly transferred to play for the G League. According to the NBA G League website, the league is “the NBA’s official minor league, preparing players, coaches, officials, trainers and front-office staff for the NBA while acting as the league’s research and development laboratory.” James joined the South Bay Lakers in the G League where he can develop his skills and then return to playing for the Los Angeles Lakers full time. Although Bronny James went to the G League, he is still struggling, averaging low numbers for his team, leaving questions about whether or not he will ever be able to play at an elite level in the NBA.
Bronny James is still a young player that has opportunities to develop his skills and prove himself in the league. Although it is uncertain whether he will be successful in the NBA, there is still a chance to achieve the NBA future he is looking for.
