The Chargers raced again this weekend at the Valentine Invitational. The New Haven’s men and women’s indoor track and field team traveled
to Boston, Mass. to compete again in Boston University’s Track and Field Center. This was another two day meet for the Chargers, where the women raced Friday, Jan. 10, and the men raced Saturday, Jan. 11, with the exception of the Distance Medley Relay which took place on Saturday for both the men and women.
On the women’s side once again, we had some top finishers and some personal records set. Calista Hutchinson finished ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.63 meters. Shraya Manick placed eighth in the weight throw with a personal record of 15.85 meters, and Tiara Mitchell finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.19 meters.
Brittney Bussiere also competed in the weight throw, placing 38th with a distance of 11.36 meters and placed 26th in the shot put with a distance of 9.85 meters.
Ivy Watts achieved another personal record at this meet with a time of 57.77 seconds in the 400 meter dash, and finished 21st. Along with Mitchell, and Hutchinson, Watts was also selected for Northeast-10 Conference Athletes of the Week. The women were all selected for their achievement in their respective events, and it was announced on Monday, Feb, 6 by the league office.
Samantha Mathewson qualified for Northeast-10 Conference in the 500 meter dash and with a time of 1:24.63, a personal record for Mathewson, and she received 38th place overall.
Hutchinson also placed 29th in the long jump with a distance of 4.81 meters. Mitchell also competed in the 60 meter hurdles, with a time of 10.43 seconds and 68th place and ran the third leg of the 4×400 meter relay team along with Watts, Monica Yanez, and Emma Tingley. Yanez also competed in the 60 meter hurdles and placed 49th with a time of 9.73 seconds.
Watts, Danielle Sorrentino, Dominique Stasulli, and Alejandra Cortez ran the Distance Medley Relay again and achieved the time of 12:43.82, a season best for the relay team, and will carry them to the New England Championship meet.
On the men’s side David Thomas brought in three top 15 finishes and won the long jump with a distance of 7.34 meters, the fifth longest in the Division II this season. Thomas placed eighth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.81 seconds, and placed 12th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.99 seconds.
Matt Jeune was also a top finisher in the high jump. Jeune placed third with a height of 2.04 meters. Pat Gosier placed 19th in the shot put, with a throw of 13.14 meters.
The Next race for the Chargers is the Northeast-10 Conference, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18. The meet will take place at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.
