NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Merrimack College in two games on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers won the opening game 6-3 and again won the second by a score of 5-4. New Haven improves to 24-9 overall and 12-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Warriors fall to 13-13 overall and 8-11 in conference play.
Game One
With two runs in the bottom of the second inning, Merrimack took an early lead. The Chargers didn’t get on the scoreboard until the top of the fourth inning then they scored three and took the lead. UNH went on to score three in the top of the sixth inning, while the Warriors added one in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring the score to 6-3.
The Chargers leaned on starting pitcher Chris Smith for a majority of the pitching load Sunday. The senior threw seven innings and tallied three strikeouts. Eric Peck and Mitch Rossi each threw one shutdown inning in relief as well.
Jack Heary led the UNH bats with two hits and two RBI’s. Ryan Brockett added one hit and one RBI, while Kyle Pettoruto led the team with two runs.
Game Two
New Haven wasted no time scoring in the nightcap, with two runs in the opening inning. Both teams were held scoreless until the fifth inning when UNH added three more runs. Merrimack went on to added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as well. Both pitching staffs then threw another four shutdown innings as the Chargers earned the 5-4 victory.
Alex Smith earned the win for the Chargers in five 2/3 innings pitched. Kyle Befus, Taylor Candage and Rossi all made appearances as well. Smith totaled six strikeouts, while Rossi added one in his second save of the day.
Short stop Ryan Brockett led the Chargers with three hits, two RBI’s and one run scored. Tom Rombilus added two hits and two runs.
