WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of New Haven baseball team swept Assumption College in a pair of Northeast-10 Conference
Southwest Divisional games Saturday afternoon. The Chargers won game one 13-2 and completed the sweep with an 11-2 victory in the nightcap. With the two wins, the Chargers improved to 21-15-1 overall and 8-7-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds dropped to 12-26-1 overall and 4-12 in the NE-10 Southwest Division.
Game One
It took a couple innings for the bats to warm up in Worcester, but after the top of the fourth inning, the runs started crossing home plate. In the bottom of the fourth, Assumption scored its only runs of the game. The Greyhounds scored a pair of runs off two hits and took the first lead of the game. The Greyhounds’ advantage didn’t last long as UNH scored three in the top of the fifth. Brendan O’Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) drove in the first run with a double to left field. Three batters later, with Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) on first base and O’Reilly on second, senior Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) hammered a triple to left center and cleared the bases. He gave UNH the lead, and the Chargers’ didn’t look back.
The Chargers added eight runs in the top of the sixth inning off eight hits and three Assumption errors. Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) posted the hit of the inning when he hit a single to left center with the bases loaded. He cleared the bases and the Chargers’ took an 11-2 lead. Brockett hit his second RBI-triple of the game in the inning as well.
Clout and Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) drove in the final two runs of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Assumption left one runner on base in the eighth, while UNH retired the side in the ninth to seal the 11-run victory.
Seven Chargers recorded multiple hits in the game. Carr went 4-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs and one run. Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Brockett and Romanelli each recorded two hits with three RBIs and one run.
On the mound, Mike Aquilino (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) recorded his fourth win of the season in five full innings. He struck out two batters and allowed just two hits. Henry Hirsch (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) threw the final four innings with four strikeouts and just one hit.
Game Two
The Chargers gradually put runs on the scoreboard in the nightcap. In the top of the second inning New Haven scored three runs off a Brendan O’Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) two-RBI single through the left side and a one-RBI single through the left side by Cory Carr (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial). The Chargers added four runs off four hits in the third inning as well.
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) led off with a single and Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) followed with a single through the right side. Sophomore Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) drove in one runner with a single through the left side, giving the Chargers a 4-0 lead. Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) doubled down the left field line and the Chargers took a 5-0 lead when Johnson crossed the plate. Brendon O’Reilly scored another two runs for UNH in the third inning with a two-RBI single up the middle.
After continuing the shutout through the fourth inning, the Chargers offense continued to add runs in the top of the fifth inning. Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) hit a lead off homerun way out of the park at H.L. Rocheleau Memorial Field. O’Reilly scored another run off a Carr ground out to take a 9-0 lead headed into the bottom of the fifth.
The Greyhounds scored their first run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth, to cut the Chargers’ lead to eight points. Carr hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the seventh and put the Chargers back ahead by nine, 10-1. In the bottom of the inning, Assumption plated one run as well to bring within eight runs. Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran) drove in the game’s final run in the top of the eighth inning with a RBI ground out to give UNH its final nine-run lead.
Freshman Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) threw seven full innings with five strikeouts and just one earned run. Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched the eighth inning and Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) threw the ninth in relief for UNH. Candage fanned two, while both held the Greyhounds hitless.
At the plate, Clout led the Chargers with three hits in five at-bats, while O’Reilly drove in four runs off two hits in two at-bats. Johnson, Buckley and Romanelli each posted two hits with two runs. Carr drove in two with one hit as well.
