On Wednesday, the Chargers hosted their cross-town rival, the Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) Owls, and lost 14-7.
The Owls attacked early, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning and three in the second. The Chargers chipped away at the deficit during the bottom of the second and scored one run after a single from second baseman Kenny Franquiz brought in right fielder Rob Taylor.
In the third inning, Southern added another run from a sacrifice fly to center field. The Chargers answered back with two runs of their own, with both runs accredited to catcher Casey Cerruto. Both teams put runs up in the fourth inning, with Southern adding four and New Haven with three.
The Chargers were successful in the fifth, going three up three down on defense and adding another run to the scoreboard on offense. The RBI came from shortstop Aedan Forde, who hit a sacrifice fly to center field and brought in third baseman Joey Frazzetta.
Both teams failed to score in the sixth inning. Facing a three-run deficit, the Chargers were unable to score for the rest of the game. SCSU refused to step off the gas and added four more runs throughout the seventh, eight and ninth innings, finalizing the score at 14-7.
and first baseman Matt McIntire led the Chargers offensively, both adding two RBIs each. Franquiz was also dominant at the plate, earning three hits over four at bats. Starting pitcher Cole Gibson took the loss on the mound for New Haven, giving up two hits, two walks, and five earned runs over 2.1 innings of work.
The Chargers ended the week with a double header on Friday against the Holy Family University Tigers and split, losing the first game 2-4 and winning the second, 8-2.
After the loss to SCSU and splitting the double-header against Holy Family, the Chargers have an overall record of 16-10 and 4-5 in conference play. New Haven will return to Frank Viera Field on Wednesday to face cross-town rivals, the Southern Connecticut State Owls.
